God Told Me Something Scary! 😱

Has God ever given you a word that scared you so much because you either felt you were not ready, or you felt incompetent to perform? Yeah, me too! You are definitely not alone, so keep reading….

God told me something scary in 2021. I remember that Sunday morning vividly, I was seated inside the beautiful auditorium of Celebration Church International, Abuja, Nigeria (my home church as at that time) when I heard that word. On impulse, I picked up my phone, opened my notepad and typed the words exactly as I heard them which is my usual practice.

Habakkuk 2:2 NKJV “Then the Lord answered me and said: “Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it,”

Then comes my reaction, “What? Me? Nah! How can?! I must have heard wrong” and all the other fear and doubt lingua that the enemy puts in our mind when God is about to do something great in our lives. Anyways, it’s been almost 2 years since God told me what He is set to accomplish in my life, and I have held onto it so strongly. That’s not the point of this piece though, I digress, I am here to talk about how to handle the fear and doubt we experience sometimes when we receive a word from God.

First things first, accept it and rejoice!

Usually when God gives you His word, He wants to take you on a journey, all you need to do is say YES and show up. Your first reaction to a word from the Lord, should be acceptance. The word of God is God himself and when you reject His word, you reject Him.

The story surrounding the birth of John the Baptist and of Jesus Christ in the book of Luke is so profound. I always wondered the difference between Zechariah’s response and Mary’s response to the word of God that warranted him going dumb and Mary being blessed (Luke1:45). The difference was the state of their heart and not necessarily the response itself. While Mary responded with faith (never had a virgin given birth, so her initial “enquiry” was pardonable), Zechariah on the other hand responded in unbelief (Abraham and Sarah had received the miracle of a child in their old age so it wasn’t the first time, Brother Zechariah why the doubt?).

Our response to prophecy should always be faith and joy. No matter how big or ridiculous it sounds, believe that the zeal of the Lord shall perform it and rejoice in this knowledge....Glory! *Inserts an agalliao dance*

Isaiah 55:11 “so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it”.

Philippians 2:13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure”.

Okay, I’ve accepted His word, what do I do next? Wage war with prophecy!

Okay, that sounds tough, let me break it down. No, I don’t mean with bows and arrows or with missiles and time bombs (2 Cor 12: 3-6). As Christians, we wage warfare with prophecy through our prayers and confessions in faith (1 Timothy 1:18-19, Jude 1:20). Whenever I receive a word from God, I write it everywhere…. from my notepad to my prophecy journal to up on my walls…. everywhere! and with every chance I get I speak those words into life (John 6:63) through heartfelt prayers and confessions.

Remember, it is such a privilege to receive a word from God, I hope this encourages you to trust God wholeheartedly and hand over control and your plans to Him. Making plans is good but wisdom and discernment is knowing when to drop your plans and say, “Yes God, what’s up?” There’s nothing as peaceful as that, trust me. May God continue to help us even as we grow in Him.

With love,
